30th April 2026: Results for 24GHz have been revised following an appeal. Upon investigation and analysis, the appeal was found to be valid and was subsequently upheld. The 24GHz standings have been republished to reflect these changes.
The mm Band contest series started earlier this year after some requests last year for a Winter event. For many it was a very cold windy and wet day, generally drizzly or overcast with poor radio conditions on all three bands. Rain for some provided both unwanted attenuation on QSO's and useful scatter on others. Nearly all of the contacts took place in the first 3 hours of the morning with most folks escaping the hilltops by early afternoon.
Despite the weather, it turned out to be quite a social event with several folks sharing sites and in some cases also sharing equipment, and sharing points! It was great to see UKuG loan kit being used on 24GHz (Steve G1PPA/P) and 47GHz (Paul G0MDQ/P, plus a second set with Andrew GW0JCC/P and Tim GW7KTP/P)
Several stations logged in BST instead of UTC, the clocks having leapt forward the night before. QSO's on these bands are hard fought and, in this instance, these obvious mistakes were adjudicated as valid this time. However, multiple stations on 24GHz lost points due to simple logging errors with incorrect callsign, RST and in some instances locator. Please spend extra time over the air, at the point of contact, confirming QSO details by asking for repeats if required. It's important to confirm QSO details in the moment, in your log. All 47GHz and 76Ghz QSO's were valid.
24GHz
- 12 stations entered, the same as the last 24GHz event in October. 18 stations were active from 7 squares.
- Last year's seasons best ODX of 184km was repeated over the same path between Dorset and Shropshire, with John G8IKP/P (IO80 Eggardon Hill) working both Rob G7MHF/P and Paul G0MDQ/P (IO82 Titterstone Clee)
- Congratulations to Andrew GW0JCC/P and Tim GW7KTP/P, who are joint winners following an upheld appeal and subsequent re-adjudication, with Rob G7MHF/P taking second.
- Thanks to Paul GW6UAJ/P for submitting a check log.
47GHz
- 5 stations submitted logs, slightly down from the 6 in October. 6 stations were active from 2 squares. For the first time in a long time I091 was not activated.
- ODX was a very respectable 87km, shared between Paul G0MDQ/P and Rob G7MHF/P (both at IO82 Titterstone Clee) and Paul GW6UAJ/P (IO81, Mynydd Maen)
- Well done to Paul G0MDQ/P and Rob G7MHF/P who both took first place, and to Andrew GW0JCC/P and Tim GW7KTP/P who both share second place. A great result for all four stations in their first 47GHz contest!
- Thanks to Paul GW6UAJ/P for submitting a check log.
76GHz
- Probably due to the very poor weather conditions and heavy rain, only 2 stations took equipment out for 76GHz, down from the 4 in October. A single QSO took place and further roving plans were abandoned due to the poor weather.
- ODX was 57km, between Dave G4FRE/P (IO82, Hollybush) and Pete GW4HQX/P (IO81, Blorenge).
- Congratulations to Dave G4FRE/P and Pete GW4HQX/P for sharing first place and taking all of the available points.
A big thank you to everyone that fought the bad weather and braved the hills, or switched on from home. For the first time in a while we had very welcome activity further East (Keith G4ODA in IO92) and further North (Steve G1PPA/P in IO93). This provided interesting sport for the regulars in IO80, IO81, IO82 and IO91! Many of the QSO's didn't go, but with better conditions and some OOK48 or CW, 200km+ ODX contacts will hopefully be achievable on 24GHz in these events in future sessions.
The second mm Band Cumulative takes place on Sunday 10th May, with additional events planned for July, September and October. The best three scores out of five counts towards the final standings, so there is still very much everything to play for! Here's hoping the weather is much calmer, drier and also warmer, for the remaining Sundays. Enjoy your contesting!
