24GHz Trophy 2026

This year's 24 GHz Trophy took place on another sweltering Sunday - a trend that seems to be defining our summer UKuG contesting! The intense conditions, with high temperature and high absolute humidity, made propagation notably poor on 1.2cm with a sharp decline in QSOs after the first couple of hours. Operators who logged their long-distance contacts early bagged the best of the conditions before signal attenuation fully set in.

Visibility across the hills was terrible, with several stations reporting haze and even sight of wildfires. Entrants summed up the day vividly:

'...Very hot, low activity and poor propagation. Worst bit was the choking caused by the smoke swirling around the hill from the Brecon and Forest of Dean fires. All that carbon in the atmosphere reduced signals!.."

"...Radio conditions average and deteriorating during the day... missed the best of the early conditions...."

Between the extreme heat and peak August summer holiday timing, turnout was noticeably much lower this year. We had 11 official log entries (down from 15 in 2025 and 14 in 2024) with 15 overall stations active across the band (down from our record 24 in 2025 and 21 in 2024).

Despite the tough propagation, one crucial metric went firmly in the right direction: the Best DX! ODX was a mouth-watering 186 km, worked between Andrew, GW0JCC/P at Blorenge (IO81) and Roger, G8CUB/P at Ventnor (IO90). This just beat the 184 km achieved in 2025 and 123 km in 2024.

Congratulations to Andrew, GW0JCC/P for taking 1st place with a winning 2-stop Blorenge then The British combo, to Rob G7MHF/P operating from Titterstone Clee in 2nd place, to Barry G4SJH/P who was third, and to everyone else who braved the heat to enter or give away points!
