July 2025 24GHz Trophy Contest Results

The July 2025 24GHz Trophy was another successful UKuG event that drew participation from 19 UK stations, with 15 submitting official entries, an increase from 14 in 2024. The contest provided a unique opportunity for all participants to concentrate on a single band!

The day was marked by high temperatures, which significantly impacted signal propagation. Many participants reported that conditions deteriorated rapidly as the day progressed, making afternoon contacts particularly challenging. Based on this feedback, UKuG will consider scheduling future 24GHz events earlier in the day to take advantage of more favourable conditions.

The contest's longest distance QSO (ODX) was an impressive 184km, just shy of the magic 200km, achieved between Rob G7MHF/P on Titterstone Clee, Shropshire (IO82) and John G8IKP/P near Eggardon Hill, Dorset (IO80). Both stations utilised Wavelab-based systems to complete the contact, which was a significant improvement over the 2024 ODX of 123km.

A third of the entrants chose to operate as rovers, traveling between two or even three different sites. This popular strategy allowed experimentation with new locations and signal paths, leading to increased contacts and scores for everyone. For the first time we saw several innovative roving scenarios, including stations changing their callsign prefix (from GW to G) or their operating status (from /P to home operation). A special thanks goes to Mike G0GJV (Mr MINOS) for quickly updating the AdjQt adjudication program to support these emerging use cases!

Two instances of more "extreme roving" stood out:

- Tim G(W)7KTP/P undertook a challenging mountain trek, first ascending Pen-Y-Gadir Fawr (800m, IO81) before driving and hiking nearly 10km to Twyn Llech (704m, IO82), with Steve G1YBB providing sherpa support.

- Paul G(W)6UAJ/P began his day at Blorenge and concluded at Charterhouse (both at opposite ends of IO81), a 60-mile, 1.5-hour road trip south to the Mendips, via the Severn Bridge.

Congratulations to Tim G(W)7KTP/P the contest winner, securing the coveted 24GHz Trophy with what may be an all-time record score and 27 validated QSOs. Well done to David M0GHZ/P in second place, and Rob G7MHF/P in third, both of whom are rewarded with certificates.

A sincere thank you to everyone who participated and made this contest another big success. The strategies and tactics developed in this event will be interesting to watch in the upcoming remainder mmWave Cumulative contests on Sunday, September 14th and October 5th.
